The Counter-Strike tournament at the Esports World Cup 2026 is down to its final 16 teams, and the title race remains unusually difficult to call. The season has only recently resumed after the post-Major summer break, leaving relatively little evidence of where the top teams currently stand. With a stacked playoff field and a single-elimination bracket offering no second chances, even the established favorites have little margin for error.
Ahead of the playoffs, and Stake break down the strongest title contenders, the teams capable of upsetting them, and the outsiders that would need an exceptional run to lift the trophy. Fans following the title race can also check the latest CS2 betting odds on Stake as the playoff bracket develops.
Strong title contenders
MOUZ have the clearest claim based on recent form. They returned from the summer break by winning BLAST Bounty Season 2, navigating the playoff bracket and eventually beating Spirit in the grand final. Their EWC run has not been flawless (FUT denied them an early playoff berth), but MOUZ recovered through the lower bracket and now enter the playoffs on the less crowded side of the draw.
Team Spirit were the other BLAST Bounty finalists and remain one of the strongest teams in the field on paper. Their run in Paris has been considerably shakier: they opened with an upset loss to JiJieHao and later needed a hard-fought three-map series against BIG to qualify. Their ceiling remains obvious, but recent performances make Spirit a less straightforward pick than their status might suggest.
Team Falcons come with the biggest caveat of the three. The Cologne Major champions suffered a surprisingly early exit from BLAST Bounty in their first event after the summer break, raising some questions about whether they could immediately reproduce their pre-break form. Their EWC campaign has been considerably more convincing so far, however, and their Major-winning ceiling and overall standing are still enough to keep them among the leading title contenders.
Dark horses
FURIA Esports are perhaps the hardest team to place. The Cologne Major runners-up also returned from the summer break with an unexpectedly early exit at BLAST Bounty, making their current level somewhat harder to judge. Unlike Falcons, however, FURIA have the benefit of a particularly favorable playoff draw at EWC, having avoided Falcons, Spirit and Vitality before a potential final.
Calling Team Vitality a dark horse would have sounded strange earlier in the season, but their return from the summer break has been difficult. Team Liquid eliminated them in their opening BLAST Bounty series, and B8 followed that with another upset at EWC. Vitality recovered to reach the playoffs, but their route now begins against FaZe, with Spirit potentially waiting immediately afterwards. The championship pedigree is still there, but the current form is much harder to trust.
FaZe Clan have provided considerably more positive evidence since the break. They reached the semifinals of BLAST Bounty and then secured an early EWC playoff berth with a convincing win over Legacy. What holds them back from the top group is primarily the draw: Vitality come first, followed potentially by Spirit and then another elite opponent in the semifinals.
Astralis have also done enough recently to warrant a place in this group. They reached the BLAST Bounty semifinals and took a map off eventual champions MOUZ before bowing out. At EWC, a loss to Falcons forced them into the lower bracket, but they responded with a 2:1 victory over Ninjas in Pyjamas to qualify. An opening playoff series against G2 gives Astralis a realistic opportunity to carry that momentum further.
Natus Vincere are more difficult to judge because they did not play BLAST Bounty, leaving EWC as their first major post-break reference point. So far, the signs have been encouraging: NAVI beat The MongolZ in three maps to secure their playoff place and now open against Legacy. A likely quarterfinal against Falcons or The MongolZ would provide a much clearer test of where they currently stand.
Long shots
G2 Esports sit closest to the dark-horse group. They failed to reach the LAN stage of BLAST Bounty after losing to Liquid, but have looked better in Paris and qualified for the playoffs with a convincing victory over BIG. Their Round of 16 matchup against Astralis is competitive rather than prohibitive, and the winner remains on the less stacked side of the bracket. Still, G2 have shown less against top opposition since the break than the teams above them.
Several other teams have already shown they can disrupt the bracket. B8 beat Vitality to qualify, while FUT did the same against MOUZ. Aurora Gaming recovered from an opening loss to BIG with comfortable victories over M80 and JiJieHao, while defending EWC champions The MongolZ remain dangerous despite drawing Falcons in the opening round. Any of them can realistically produce an upset in a best-of-three, but turning that into four consecutive playoff victories would be a much bigger task.
GamerLegion , Legacy and magic complete the field. All three earned their places in the top 16, but a championship run from any of them would require a significant step beyond what they have shown against elite opposition so far.
The opening playoff round, scheduled for August 19-20, features several clear favorites alongside a few matchups that look considerably closer based on the current odds.
