Gemmill leaves Scotland U21 role after 13 years

Scot Gemmill will depart from the role of Scotland Under-21 head coach after 13 years, the Scottish FA have announced.

Former Scotland midfielder Gemmill, 55, previously coached the nation's under-17s, was unable to get the under-21s to a European Championship but did seal fourth place at the Toulon Tournament in 2018.

Gemmill played his club football predominantly in England with spells at Nottingham Forest, Everton, Preson North End, Leicester City and Oxford United before a year at New Zealand Knights.

SFA chief football officer Craig Mulholland said: "On behalf of the Scottish FA, I'd like to thank Scot for his many years of dedicated service to the game in this country.

"He is held in the highest esteem by those who have worked alongside him, and I know that respect extends to the countless young players who have played under him at the various age levels.

"As a player and coach Scot has represented Scotland with distinction and I know that means a lot to him. We wish him well in his next opportunity."

Scotland Under-21s' next fixtures are in the autumn against Azerbaijan (home) on 30 September and Bulgaria (away) on 6 October in European Championship qualifying.
