Lip reader works out what Donald Trump said to every Spain and Argentina player at World Cup final

A professional lip reader has claimed US President Donald Trump said the same phrase to every player as he presented them with a World Cup medal.

Spain extended their unbeaten run to 38 games, the longest international streak in history, at MetLife Stadium as Ferran Torres' goal in the 106th minute was enough to secure victory against Argentina.

After Sunday's full-time whistle, Trump took part in the medal ceremony alongside Mark Carney, the Canadian Prime Minister, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Here, the 80-year-old greeted every player on stage by shaking their hand. He then exchanged words with said player before either presenting him with a medal or tapping him on the chest.

So, what did Trump say to each individual? According to professional lip reader Nicola Hickling , he said: "You are a champ", before adding: "Amazing player."

All but one player shook Trump's hand. As seen in the footage below, Argentina defender Cristian Romero, who started the final before being withdrawn in the 70th minute after sustaining an injury, snubbed the gesture.

In fact, Romero could be seen shaking both Infantino’s and Sheinbaum’s hands but appeared to ignore the US president by walking straight past him.

Someone who looked reluctant to engage in a handshake was Spain forward Borja Iglesias, who made contact with Trump’s hand but did so without looking towards the US President.

Iglesias has previously called out Trump for "struggling with fundamental values".

"There's a protocol and a commitment to fulfill out of politeness, even though what my gut tells me to do differs from what I should do," he said ahead of the game.

"I like people who fight for progress and for fundamental values to be upheld, and I think Trump struggles with that."

"I don't want to go to prison,” Iglesias added, as per The Mirror . "I hope to greet him at a time when we are all very happy, and that it passes very quickly and I can forget about it.

"I don't think this is the time to create controversy. People know perfectly well what I think. I would love to do many things, but the reality is that even if people think I am all-powerful, I don't have that much power to tackle certain things."

Taking to Instagram ahead of kick-off, Iglesias posted a picture of the MetLife Stadium seating plan that featured prices of tickets alongside the caption: "Una Verguenza", which translates in English to: "A disgrace."
