York appoint Lindsey after shock Maynard sacking

York City have appointed former Crawley Town boss Scott Lindsey as their new head coach, one day after sacking title-winning manager Stuart Maynard.

Lindsey, 54, took Crawley up to League One in his first spell in charge in 2024 but his second spell was brought to an end in March after a 10-game winless run in League Two left them one point above the relegation zone.

His first game as York boss will be against his former side in an EFL Cup preliminary tie on Monday, 3 August.

Maynard was appointed in August last year when York's owners Matt and Julie-Anne Uggla sacked Adam Hinshelwood, who had led them to second place in 2024-25 and had the team unbeaten from their first five games.

However, the decision was ultimately vindicated last season as Maynard guided the club to the National League title with 108 points and ended their 10-year EFL exile.

York described Lindsey, who has also had stints in charge of Swindon Town and MK Dons, as having "a vast wealth of experience working across the EFL".

Joao Alves, while Gary Elphick, who worked under both Hinshelwood and Maynard, will stay on as first team coach.

York start the League Two season with a home game against Bristol Rovers on Saturday, 15 August.
