Ronaldo faces criticism over Jorge Jesus dispute and 2011 comments
Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from Portugal’s camp has revived scrutiny of his 2011 reaction to Ricardo Carvalho’s similar decision.

Cristiano Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp last week after Jorge Jesus kept him on the bench during the team’s 2-1 Nations League win over Norway. The 41-year-old later explained on social media that Jesus had told him he would not travel for matches against Norway and Denmark. Ronaldo said he would provide further reasons for his departure.
His decision has drawn comparisons with Ricardo Carvalho’s exit from Portugal’s camp in September 2011. Carvalho said he had felt disrespected by manager Paulo Bento, then received a one-year ban from the Portuguese Football Federation before retiring from international football. At the time, Ronaldo supported Bento’s authority, saying selection should depend on form and that no player had a guaranteed place.
Under FPF rules, leaving a national-team activity without justification can bring a suspension of one to six months. Professional players may also face a fine of between 5 and 10 UC. Ronaldo therefore risks missing Portugal duty, potentially affecting the final stage of an international career that includes 146 goals in 234 appearances. His strained relationship with Jesus now leaves his return uncertain.
ColdMath take
Portugal must now clarify Ronaldo’s status before upcoming international fixtures. The possible suspension could remove him from the squad for one to six months and complicate plans for his international farewell.
The dispute also places greater responsibility on Jorge Jesus to manage the squad’s hierarchy and explain selection decisions clearly.
Pick an outcome. Trade it beside the story.
