Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. Chooses Portugal Despite His Father’s Dispute
Cristiano Ronaldo Jr. remains committed to Portugal despite his father’s dispute with Jorge Jesus and eligibility for several other national teams.

Cristiano Ronaldo Jr., 16, has chosen Portugal despite his father’s dispute with national-team coach Jorge Jesus. Ronaldo Sr. was left on the bench against Norway in a UEFA Nations League match last week, then voluntarily departed the camp and accused Jesus of repeatedly breaking promises over his playing time. Whether they settle the disagreement before the November international break remains uncertain.
A right-footed left winger, Cristiano Jr. is part of Al-Nassr’s academy after previously training at Juventus and Manchester United. He has represented Portugal at Under-15 and Under-16 level, scoring five goals in 13 youth appearances. His international debut came in a 3-2 victory over Croatia at the Vlatko Markovic tournament in May last year.
The teenager could also have represented Spain after living there for more than five years while his father played for Real Madrid, or the United States because he was born in California. A fourth option may exist because his mother’s identity is unknown. He has Cape Verdean ancestry through a great-great-grandmother, but does not meet any of FIFA’s four eligibility requirements for that country. Ronaldo Sr. has 146 goals in 234 Portugal appearances and helped win Euro 2016 and the 2019 and 2025 Nations Leagues. In 2018, he said he dreamed of seeing his son become a professional, while insisting the decision would be the teenager’s and that he would not apply pressure.
ColdMath take
Portugal keeps a committed youth prospect, while Cristiano Jr. remains at academy level. The senior-team dispute could still shape the atmosphere around the November break.
Ronaldo Jr.’s international future is currently tied to Portugal’s youth teams; no senior-team decision is reported.
