Baleba faces defining Manchester United test after £70m move
Manchester United’s £70m midfielder Carlos Baleba could make his debut against Tottenham after recovering from an ankle injury.

Carlos Baleba’s first major challenge as a Manchester United player could arrive at Old Trafford this weekend. The 22-year-old midfielder joined from Brighton for £70m on 25 August, despite an ankle injury, and has yet to make his debut. United may still have to wait until after the international break before he is ready to play.
The timing is significant. United sit 12th in the Premier League after taking five points from five matches, while Brighton overturned a 2-0 deficit at Old Trafford to eliminate them from the EFL Cup. Tottenham, currently bottom, visit next before United face three successive away games, including Champions League trips to Atletico Madrid and Como and a league match at Leeds.
Baleba’s pace and ability to cover ground could address a clear weakness in Michael Carrick’s midfield. United have been vulnerable when opponents play through them and have conceded two goals in four of their seven matches in all competitions. The team is also one of only four top-flight sides yet to keep a clean sheet.
There are encouraging signs away from the pitch too. Baleba is becoming more comfortable after an initially shy start, has improved his English since moving to England from Lille in 2023 and has formed a friendship with Amad Diallo. United will need the performances that earned Baleba attention during the 2024-25 season, rather than the less convincing displays that followed. His determination, shaped by demanding training from his father, remains central to his outlook.
ColdMath take
Baleba’s debut would give United a specialist holding midfielder with the speed to improve defensive coverage. His first appearance will also provide the clearest early indication of whether he can justify the club’s £70m investment.
The Tottenham match carries added importance because another defeat could deepen United’s poor start before a demanding run of away fixtures.
Pick an outcome. Trade it beside the story.
