Southampton’s Tonda Eckert reflects on life-changing Spygate case
Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has discussed his suspended FA ban and the end of a four-month investigation into Spygate.

Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert says the Spygate affair has had a profound impact on his life. The 33-year-old spoke publicly for the first time since the Football Association imposed a six-week suspended ban and a £28,000 fine over his involvement in the case.
Southampton were removed from the Championship play-offs in May after admitting that training sessions involving Oxford United, Ipswich Town and Middlesbrough had been monitored before the semi-final. Eckert avoided a personal sanction that could have put his position at risk, despite an FA investigation lasting more than four months.
The FA had sought a three-month suspension, but the commission reduced it after recognising significant mitigation, particularly his genuine remorse. The ruling remains subject to a possible appeal. Eckert said the decision allowed him and those close to him to move on, with Southampton now focused on their season and Sunday’s meeting with Portsmouth at 12:00 BST.
ColdMath take
Eckert remains available to lead Southampton, with the suspension not taking immediate effect. The club can now prepare for its next fixture against Portsmouth while the FA’s position on a possible appeal is still unresolved.
Pick an outcome. Trade it beside the story.
