Cristiano Ronaldo is welcome to make a return to the Portugal team, according to head coach Jorge Jesus, who addressed the much-talked-about situation after Sunday's Nations League win over Norway.

Last week, Ronaldo walked out on Portugal 's camp, just days after Jesus decided against using the forward against Norway , despite sending him to warm up for around 30 minutes.

An emergency meeting involving Ronaldo , Jesus and Pedro Proenca, the president of the Portuguese Football Federation, took place after the game, but questions around the forward's international future remain.

Ronaldo has since promised to reveal the truth behind his sudden departure from camp. Jesus, meanwhile, confirmed he would tell his side of the story after Portugal's game against Norway.

Jorge Jesus gives Cristiano Ronaldo ultimatum after Norway game

On Sunday night, Jesus did exactly that. Speaking in his press conference, the 72-year-old revealed that Ronaldo can return to the national team fold if he wants.

"I don’t know what Cristiano may decide," he began after Portugal's 2-1 win over Norway . "I’ve already said what I had to say. For me, this was never an issue.

"Having a player who is a symbol like him does not mean there has to be anything non-negotiable on my part as a coach. Nothing happened that called my authority into question.

"For me, Cristiano will be eligible for selection the next time the squad is announced, provided he is playing. If he wants to, he will return to the national team. You can’t break up a year-long friendship because of a situation I can’t even understand.

"This whole problem only arose because it was him, because he did or did not warm up. That happens with every player. Cristiano is different; he is a symbol, but for me it was never a problem."

'I don't apologise to anyone' - Jorge Jesus responds to Bruno Fernandes' comments

Ahead of their clash against Norway, Fernandes stated that Ronaldo remains the "greatest symbol" and "greatest icon" of the Portugal national team. He also called for calm and unity.

"I completely agree with what Bruno Fernandes said," Jesus said. "That is also my view. One of the things I told Cristiano was that he could not end his national-team career after losing at the World Cup and walking off in tears.

"He was supposed to play here today, but, given everything that happened, the situation changed. Everything has been said. I am the head coach, I select whoever I want, and I don’t ask anyone who I should select or who should play.

"It was because the player had been warming up. Now, apologise for what and to whom? I don’t apologise to anyone," he added, as per Flash Score .
