A group of Manchester United supporters plans to unveil an updated version of the famous ticker banner during Saturday’s Premier League match against Tottenham. The display is set to return to Old Trafford after a 15-year absence, giving the Stretford End a familiar reminder of the rivalry with Manchester City.

The decision follows an independent commission’s finding that City were guilty of every charge concerning serious breaches of Premier League financial rules. Between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons, the commission said the club used sham commercial agreements in a disguised funding arrangement that artificially increased reported revenue by £830 million.

City confirmed last week that they are appealing the ruling, which could affect how the club’s achievements during that nine-year period and beyond are viewed. United fans are now preparing to revive a banner first introduced in the Stretford End in 2000, originally marking City’s long wait for a major trophy.

The original message read ‘24 YEARS’, referring to City’s trophy drought after their 1976 League Cup win. It was removed in 2011 after City won the FA Cup, when the counter showed ‘35 YEARS’. The Red Army group has reportedly paid £114 for the new ‘51 YEARS’ version ahead of the Tottenham fixture.

Former United manager Jose Mourinho has also reflected on the case, joking that he might be 80 before the legal process ends. He expects a final ruling to be followed by appeals and further appeals. Mourinho has previously argued that financial breaches should cost clubs points and said United should legally have won the 2017-18 league, while adding that such a result alone would not have provided stability or continuity.

ColdMath take

The banner will turn Saturday’s Tottenham match into a visible expression of United’s rivalry with City. Its return reflects the supporters’ response to the commission’s verdict, while City’s appeal means the wider sporting consequences remain unresolved.

For United, the gesture is symbolic rather than competitive: it will not alter the match or the legal process, but it will put the financial case back into the atmosphere around Old Trafford.
