Carrick urges swift clarity on Manchester City financial case
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick says a swift conclusion to Manchester City’s appeal is vital for clubs and the Premier League’s history.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has called for a prompt conclusion to Manchester City’s financial case, saying clarity is important for everyone across the Premier League. United face Tottenham on Saturday, while the league continues to await the outcome of City’s appeal against an independent commission’s findings.
The commission found Manchester City guilty of serious financial breaches across nine seasons, from 2009/10 to 2017/18. Its conclusions included the use of sham commercial agreements to increase reported revenue and reduce costs, while most charges linked to a failure to co-operate with the league’s investigation were also upheld.
City deny wrongdoing, and any punishment remains undecided while the appeal proceeds. Carrick said the case had affected him personally, particularly because he had been involved in title races in which United finished behind City. Even so, he stressed that the emotions of competing for and winning a trophy belong to the moment and cannot be removed by later decisions.
Several managers offered cautious reactions. Marco Rose, Fabian Hurzeler, Frank Lampard, Daniel Farke, Andoni Iraola and Matthias Jaissle said the process was outside their authority and that their focus remained on football. Oliver Glasner and Regis Le Bris said rule-breaking should carry consequences, while also calling for patience and a final decision soon to protect the integrity of the competition.
ColdMath take
For Manchester United, the immediate priority remains Saturday’s match with Tottenham. Beyond that fixture, Carrick’s comments show that the unresolved case continues to carry sporting and historical significance for clubs involved in past title races.
A final ruling would help teams understand the consequences and move forward, regardless of the outcome.
Pick an outcome. Trade it beside the story.
