Messi’s farewell contrasts with Ronaldo’s Portugal standoff
Lionel Messi ended his Argentina career with a goal, while Cristiano Ronaldo’s dispute with Jorge Jesus has cast doubt on his Portugal future.

Lionel Messi received an emotional farewell in Buenos Aires as Argentina defeated Benin, scoring in his final international appearance. The 39-year-old left to a sellout crowd of 85,000 at the Monumental, after announcing his retirement from international football in August. His Argentina career ends with one World Cup, two Copa América titles, and national records for appearances and goals.
Almost 6,000 miles away, Cristiano Ronaldo’s relationship with Portugal manager Jorge Jesus suffered a serious rupture. Ronaldo left the Nations League camp after remaining unused against Norway and learning he would not start against Denmark in November. In a statement of nearly 2,000 words, he accused Jesus of breaking his word twice, while accepting that his own decision to leave camp should be assessed and punished.
Ronaldo has not announced his retirement and rejected the idea that his Portugal career is over. The Al-Nassr forward has 146 goals in 234 appearances, both world records, and is chasing 1,000 goals for club and country; he currently has 979. Jesus says the national-team door remains open, but opinion in Portugal is divided. Messi, meanwhile, will continue with Inter Miami and remain involved in football beyond playing.
ColdMath take
Messi’s international chapter has closed on his own terms, while Ronaldo’s next Portugal appearance depends on whether he and Jesus can restore a workable relationship. His records strengthen his case for a farewell, but the immediate sporting dispute remains unresolved.
For Argentina, attention now turns to Messi’s club career with Inter Miami. Portugal must decide how to handle Ronaldo’s role while preparing for its next Nations League commitments.
Pick an outcome. Trade it beside the story.
