Real Madrid make contact over Napoli midfielder Scott McTominay

Real Madrid have contacted Scott McTominay’s representatives about a possible transfer to the Bernabeu, with the midfielder’s future at Napoli still unsettled. The Scotland international joined Napoli from Manchester United in the summer of 2024 and is now in the third season of a four-year deal with the Italian club.

Napoli were reported in August to be preparing an extension through 2030, with an option for another year. However, no agreement has been completed, and negotiations have slowed. Several Premier League clubs are also expected to show interest in the 29-year-old, who was linked with a return to England during the summer.

A move to Madrid could reunite McTominay with Jose Mourinho, who handed him his Manchester United debut against Arsenal during the 2016-17 campaign. Mourinho has repeatedly praised the midfielder and selected him for a Manager’s Player of the Year award in 2018, created specifically to recognise his outstanding season.

McTominay joined Manchester United at five and made 255 appearances for the club. He has previously spoken about Mourinho’s importance to his career, recalling their emotional meeting when the manager left United. The pair remain in occasional contact, with Mourinho sometimes messaging him after strong performances.

ColdMath take

Real Madrid’s enquiry adds another major option while Napoli’s renewal discussions remain unresolved. Any decision will depend on the stalled contract talks and the interest expected from Premier League clubs.

McTominay could also be reunited with Mourinho, who played a decisive role at the start of his senior career.
