G2 defeat Astralis to reach EWC quarter-finals

huNter- crushed Astralis' key after eliminating them from the tournament.

G2 won their Esports World Cup Round of 16 bout against Astralis 2-1, falling on Ancient 6-13 before winning their Dust2 pick 13-6 and dominating the CT side of Inferno in a 13-7 decider map victory.

With Astralis out of the way in the single-elimination playoff bracket, G2 will now set their sights on the winner of FURIA vs. Aurora , their next rival in the quarter-finals of the $2,000,000 event in Paris.

The series got underway on Astralis ' pick of Ancient, and they got off to a flying 6-0 until a double P250 opener on Boost helped G2 rally on the defense as they won five in a row before losing the last of the half.

Astralis didn't deflate, however, and they asserted their dominance on the CT side, winning six of seven rounds to secure the 1-0 lead in the series, 13-6.

G2 's pick was Dust2, and they got off to a big lead early on. It wasn't until a Gytis "⁠ryu⁠" Glušauskas triple on the B site in the ninth round that Astralis found a way to break through.

Astralis won two more on the trot before G2 closed out the half with a 9-3 lead. G2 extended their lead to 11-3, more than enough leeway to absorb a scattering of round losses before closing it out on the defense 13-6 to tie up the series.

The most classic of decider maps, Inferno, was left over in the veto to crown a victor. The map was a much closer affair early on, with G2 winning the forcebuy after losing pistols to take a 4-1 lead. A lead they held onto in the half, 7-5.

A Guy "⁠NertZ⁠" Iluz triple in the second pistol round extended G2 's lead. He once again helped extend it when up 10-6, and then made it a triple of triples to put an end to the series, this time spamming through the smoke on Banana as G2 closed it out 13-7.
